Miniconoscan launch – a compact, cost-efficient system for high accuracy 3D scanningKeywords: Metrology, 3D scanning

Leicester-based electro optical metrology company, Spectrum Metrology, has just launched a compact 3D scanning system – the Miniconoscan 3000 (Plate 13). This cost-effective, easy-to-handle system combines the inherent capabilities of the patented Conoprobe non-contact sensor with a smart x-y scanning system. The high accuracy and repeatability of the 3D scanning makes it suitable for reverse engineering, quality control and general-purpose 3D applications.

The Conoscan maintains high precision and repeatability over a wide working range. The scale of measurement on the Miniconoscan can simply be altered by changing the objective lens – allowing users to purchase one system with different lenses for a range of applications.

The technology behind this revolutionary system is "conoscopic holography", which uses optical interference through refracting crystals to very accurately measure height changes. This patented technology solves the problems traditionally caused by awkward shapes, steep angles and different materials. Applications are wide ranging and include the small height changes on PCBs, radius and steep angle measurements of moulded plastic parts and holes and radii of any precision machined parts.
