A new report has just been published by Reed Electronics Research which analyses the highly dynamic global automotive sensors industry. The report quantifies and forecasts the world markets by volume and value, analysed according to the four major car producing territories (see Figure 1), and broken down into eight product categories. It shows that the world market will rise from some 860 million sensors in 1998 to over 1.4 billion sensors by 2004, valued at an estimated US$4.6 billion. Technological innovation is rife and the report contains extensive details of prevailing R&D, including the impact of developments in silicon microengineering, digital/smart sensors, novel gas sensors and optical sensing etc. Major market opportunities are identified in areas such as advanced occupant restraint systems, vehicle stability systems and climate control and in longer-term applications such as driver alertness monitoring. The report includes detailed profiles of 23 leading suppliers of automotive sensors and concludes with a comprehensive supplier directory.
