City Technology goes for GOLD! new 4OX Oxygen sensor has two-year life

Keywords Gas, Sensors

City Technology have brought their 21 years of sensor manufacturing experience to bear in the development of a new Oxygen sensor, the 4OX, their first with a lifetime of two years in a small housing of this type (see Plate 4). The 4OX, which is suitable for a wide range of applications and portable safety in particular, will be available in volume from 1 January 1999.

An extended warranty of two years supports the lifetime promise of this, the first in a new series of quality City Technology sensors the Gold Series. A premium product, as the series name suggests, the 4OX is the flagship of the rest of the range to come on stream over the next 12 months.

Laser drilling technology brings two-year life

Harnessing long-awaited advances in laser drilling technology has made the two-year-life possible for the first time. Until now, the key life-limiting factor has been the rate of consumption of the lead inside the sensor, the quantities of which could not be increased without compromising industry standard size specifications.

During the sensing process, oxygen passes through tiny holes in a diffusion barrier to come into contact with the lead. The smaller the holes, the slower the lead consumption. Today, lasers are able to drill far smaller holes than before, thereby allowing less oxygen to pass through the diffusion barrier and conserving the lead for longer.

Oxygen sensors have a very wide range of applications, dominated by the portable safety instrument market. Instrument manufacturers are under constant pressure to produce smaller, lighter instruments, most of which contain three or four sensors detecting a range of gases.

Jonathan Gilby, business development director, said: "Personal safety customers will find the Gold Series 4OX worth its weight in gold. A real plus will be the reduction in the cost of instrument ownership as the 4OX will simplify servicing and replacement schedules and extend the period between them."

In addition to the two-year warranty for the 4OX, customers will be provided with trials results on request. World-wide demand is likely to be considerable.
