Tinder-box Conference, London, UK, September 23, 2010
Article Type: Resources From: Strategic HR Review, Volume 10, Issue 2
A total of 60 influential leaders from the corporate, co-operative and not-for-profit sectors joined a debate to define “Leadership for the Future” at an event in The House of Commons in September. Delegates from organizations, including Google, Lloyds Banking Group, PWC and Cancer Research UK shared their perspectives on the attributes needed to be a successful, future leader at the 2010 Tinder-box Conference.
Three clear themes emerged from the evening of stimulating debate. The attributes defined by the group as vital for future leaders are:
The need for individuals to have the courage to be more of themselves.
The importance of making it safe for their team to follow into the unknown.
The desire and willingness to adapt.
The conference saw those attending gain a rare insight to the personal perspectives of four speakers who opened the discussion with their views. Kevin Chapman, HR director PWC, and Dominic Gibb, finance MD at Lehman Brothers, spoke about their experience of collaborative leadership through dramatic change, as they lead teams through the administration of Lehman Brothers. Chris Chaplin, logistics director, Premier Foods, gave his perspective about the power of leadership through the mergers and acquisition process while Ed Mayo, general secretary Co-operatives UK, highlighted the growing interest in co-operative leadership.
We heard from leaders across all sectors who gave their personal formula for successful leadership, however it was astonishing to hear such a clear and common leadership agenda from all those attending. There is little doubt that the over-whelming skills for future leaders in any organization will be courage, inclusivity and adaptability. The key is how to recognize, develop and bring to life those behaviors.
