Purpose – to study the approaches used by established companies to organize programmes designed to encourage technology-based radical innovation. Design/methodology/approach – a review of the literature of key factors in designing radical innovation programmes is presented, focusing on the conflicts reported in the innovation literature concerning the appropriate design of the strategic, structural, and process components of these programmes. Reports the results of a longitudinal, comparative case analysis of 143 interviews with managers involved in innovation programmes in 12 multinational industrial corporations, where the research also involved site visits at each company and 81 biannual follow-up interviews with key managers in each company conducted over a three-year period.Article Type: Case studyISSN: 0737-6782Reference: 38AR975
