Purpose – Reports on the views of five leading chief executives on their recipe for weathering the economic downturn. Design/methodology/approach – Features interviews with five leading chief executives, whose companies were listed in “Forbes” most admired companies listings; investigates their keys to success as they battle to combat the effects of the recession. Identifies the five as: Gary Kelly (Southwest Airlines), Muhtar Kent (Coca-Cola), Bill Weldon (Johnston and Johnston), Jim Skinner (McDonald’s) and Fred Smith (FedEx). Records, among others, things, what Gary Kelly had to say about what keeps him up at night and how Bill Weldon prepares for a rainy day; highlights Muhtar Kent emphasis on the need to meet customers’ needs and how Fred Smith has “built FedEx with a lot of flexibility to meet cyclical financial situations”.
