Purpose homes in on bad boss characteristics. Design/methodology/approach highlights the havoc that bad bosses can wreck in the workplace; outlines some bad boss characteristics and looks at how workplace bullying can be particularly detrimental and costly. Drawing on the expertise of an executive coach, spells out what it takes for someone to be defined as a good boss and examines what those in the business world mean by a bad boss. Records the views of a human resource manager on those personality traits that can make you either a good or bad boss; illustrating with examples and quoting management experts, identifies those small to medium-sized companies that are getting it right; provides the example of Auckland-based function and event management company Creative Functions. Offers a three-step checklist to check whether you are the “boss from hell” and makes suggestions on what you can do to improve your management skills.
