Purpose to assess the nature and importance of strategy in the company. Design/methodology/approach defines strategy as what the company is actually about, its reason for being, and the unique value it brings to the world. Findings strategy is not simply a plan which positions the company in its competitive landscape, but should guide the company’s development over time. As chief strategist, the CEO is guardian of this purpose, and the job of the strategist cannot be outsourced. Competitive advantage is not the ultimate goal of strategy, but rather it is essential for strategy. Originality/value shows that companies change greatly over time, and that an organic conception of strategy recognizes that whatever constitutes strategic advantage will change.
