Purpose to explain the implications of the UK’s proposed carbon reduction commitment (CRC). Design/methodology/approach reports that from 2010 the CRC, a mandatory auction-based emissions trading scheme, will target large non-energy intensive businesses and public sector entities; and expects the benefits gained from energy efficiency to exceed the costs of participation. Explains the scheme’s cap-and-trade mode of operation, who it will affect, how it will work and the financial responsibilities of participants. Warns that finance teams will probably have responsibility for purchasing CRC allowances and urges them to communicate with other teams in their organization about energy use, opportunities to reduce it and how CRC information will be collected. Provides a web address for further information. Originality/value alerts readers to the need to plan for CRC introduction in the UK.ISSN: 1471-9185Reference: 37AC404
