Eastman launches new DCM-free solution for paint-stripper formulators in the EU

Eastman Chemical Company launches Eastman™ n-butyl propionate for use in the formulation of dichloromethane (DCM)-free paint strippers in the European Union (EU). Eastman™ n-butyl propionate is fully compliant with new requirements under EU legislation restricting the use of paint strippers containing DCM and possesses a low-risk characterization ratio value, commonly used to determine potential impacts on human health.

Eastman™ n-butyl propionate enhances the performance of paint-stripper formulations and shows very good synergistic effect with commonly used “active” solvents such as dimethylsulphoxide (DMSO) or 1-ethyl-2-pyrrolidone (NEP).

“In this new regulatory structure, formulation professionals in the EU need to find a safe and effective alternative to DCM paint strippers,” says Ralf Taube, Market Development Manager, Eastman. “When blended with DMSO or NEP Eastman™ n-butyl propionate enhances the performance of these DCM-free paint strippers. Eastman research demonstrates improved paint-stripping efficiency of these solvents by adding Eastman™ n-butyl propionate. The blend can reduce the stripping-time by more than 75 percent as compared to full DMSO or NEP paint stripping solvent.”

“In addition, Eastman™ EEP (Ethyl 3-Ethoxypropionate) also has been found to work well as paint stripper solvent with good solvency power and it helps compatabilise the wax in solution and reduces phase separation, contributing to high performance in terms of paint-stripping efficiency,” says Taube.
