Sherwin-Williams Sher-Release Silicone Fouling Release Coating System delivers fuel savings
Article Type: Industry news From: Pigment & Resin Technology, Volume 39, Issue 3
Sherwin-Williams Sher-Release Silicone Fouling Release Coating System is an effective, non-toxic alternative to conventional antifouling coatings. An US Navy patented solution, the Sher-Release System causes marine organisms to be released from surfaces at slow speeds and light water pressure, a solution that works with nature, not against it. It offers better adhesion, abrasion resistance and scratch resistance compared to standard silicone systems, according to the company.
“Not only does the Sher-Release System provide superior biofouling protection, work boats, passenger vessels and commercial ships can realize fuel savings as much as six to ten percent,” said Brad Rossetto, Vice President, Marketing, Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine Coatings. “It is a cost-effective alternative that has been tested side by side with other fluoropolymer/silicone to ASTM 5618 Barnacle Adhesion, and delivered the best performance of all systems, up to 50% better than competitive systems.”
The Sher-Release System is self-cleaning with constant water flow during regular use. The hull is also easily cleaned by water jet under normal pressure. Cleaning and recoating are easily achieved during normal drydock scheduling, providing maintenance savings.
Sher-Release System incorporates a three layer tie coat formula. An epoxy anti-corrosive layer substrate and the tough, protective silicone topcoat are effectively interlocked by a unique elastomeric formula, creating superior adhesion and durability. The technology increases the toughness and adhesion properties of both the epoxy and silicone coatings, creating a system more durable than anything else currently in use.
Easily applied by trained staff with airless spray equipment, the Sher-Release System contains no heavy metals or biocides and has low levels of VOCs. It poses no hazard to marine life.
