Printing firm is now environmental company of year

Article Type: Environment and safety From: Pigment

Acknowledgment that Cambrian Printers has been at the forefront of environmental issues for a number of years has been presented to the firm in the form of the environmental company of the year Cambrian Printers' Sales Development Director, Carrick Wilkie, was presented with the award by KBA UK's Managing Director, Christian Knapp. Wilkie said: “This is the greatest accolade we've ever received and a pinnacle in the company's history. We take great pride in our work and the awards we've secured in the past but this is the one award we've always aspired to win and sets us apart as leaders in our industry”. The awards judges' commentary referred to Cambrian's success as being unsurprising considering the company's wealth of accreditations and awards.

Their citation said: “Cambrian Printers jumps straight to the head of the line this year, picking up the environmental award at its first attempt. Those in the know will not be surprised however, as this family- owned printer has been at the forefront of all things green for many years, as attested to by its raft of accreditations and awards”.

Robert Read, Cambrian Printers' Chairman and Managing Director, commented: “This is a huge award for us, which really puts us at the forefront of our industry. We've taken major steps to improve our performance as a business and have considered the environment as a core part of our long-term strategy. We've made savings in terms of technology and equipment, making sure we re-use and recycle where possible. We've also been creative, for example, by introducing an interest free loan to staff for bikes as a carbon neutral way to travel to and from work and introducing a wormery to cope with our canteen waste”. Another development by the company is its decision to print all standard work on Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paper.

Usually, commanding a premium and only used when specified by the customer, paper certified by the FSC is considered the environmentally sound choice for printing, added the company.

Read added: “Receiving such an award is the best recommendation we could ever receive. We currently print a range of publications on behalf of clients who consider our commitment to the environment and sustainability as one of the main reasons for doing business with us. This award just proves we're the leaders on a UK scale and is a fantastic boost to our team”. Cambrian Printers is also one of the six printing companies chosen as a supplier by the UK's Environment Agency.

The company currently holds ISO14001, ISO9001, Green Dragon Level 5, Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) and FSC chain of custody certification.

It has also previously won the National Recycling Awards 2006 for the best industry recycling initiative, the Green Apple Environmental Awards 2006 and 2007 and the Ceredigion Business Awards 2006 for being the best large small to medium-sized employer.
