Surface preparation specifications and practices

The Society for Protective Coatings has published a new compilation of surface preparation standards and other documents titled Surface Preparation Specifications and Practices. This new 369-page softcover provides a complete collection of SSPC surface preparation specifications, together with a select group of chapters on surface preparation materials, methods, and equipment from other key SSPC publications.

The new Surface Preparation Specifications and Practices includes the widely used SSPC/NACE joint surface preparation standards for white metal (SP5/NACE1), near-white (SP10/NACE2), commercial (SP6/ NACE3), industrial (SP14/NACE8), and brush-off blast cleaning (SP7/ NACE4), as well as the joint SSPC/ NACE standards for waterjetting (SP12/NACE5) and the surface preparation of concrete (SP13/ NACE6). The compilation also contains the SSPC standards for solvent cleaning (SP1), hand tool cleaning (SP2), power tool cleaning (SP3, SP11, SP15), and pickling (SP8), plus the SSPC abrasives specifications (AB1, AB2, AB3), the SSPC Surface Preparation Commentary for Steel and Concrete Substrates (SP COM), and guides to the use of SSPC surface preparation reference photographs. Also included are the joint SSPC/NACE reports on thermal pre cleaning (TR1/ NACE6G194) and wet abrasive blast cleaning (TR2/NACE6G198), and the SSPC technology update on chemical stripping (TU6).

In addition to a complete collection of SSPC surface preparation standards, the new Surface Preparation Specifications and Practices also includes the recently published SSPC- Guide 15, Field Methods for Retrieval and Analysis of Soluble Salts on Steel and Other Nonporous Substrates. The new SSPC-Guide 15 classifies and discusses the most commonly used field methods for the retrieval and analysis of soluble salts, the materials and procedures used during retrieval, analytical methods used to determine the concentration of the soluble salts in the extracted solution, and the relative advantages and limitations of each. Much of the information contained in the new SSPC-Guide 15 comes from the SSPC technology update SSPC- TU4, Field Methods for the Retrieval and Analysis of Soluble Salts on Substrates. Both documents are included in this volume, together with the chapter “Effect of Soluble Salts on Protective Coatings” from Good Painting Practice, SSPC Painting Manual, Volume 1.

Other excerpts from Good Painting Practice contained in the new Surface Preparation Specifications and Practices include chapters on various surface preparation methods and equipment; metallic, nonmetallic, and specialty abrasives; dehumidification during coating operations; the preparation of concrete and other nonferrous substrates; and other relevant topics. The new compilation also contains chapters on the inspection of steel and concrete surfaces before and after cleaning from SSPC's The Inspection of Coatings and Linings. SSPC believes that putting these excerpts side by side with the standards they reference not only helps to clarify the text, it also helps to place the standards in a practical context.
