Synthetic Emulsion Polymers in Europe

Keywords: Polymers, Paints, Markets, Europe

IAL Consultants have announced the publication of the second edition of the report, Synthetic Emulsion Polymers in Europe. This is available in four sector-specific volumes on the following applications: paints and inks, paper and packaging, adhesives and sealants and finally, textiles, nonwovens and carpets. A fifth volume, forming an executive summary, is available to customers buying the complete report.

Total demand for synthetic polymer emulsions in Europe in 2002 is estimated at almost 1.6 million tonnes on a dry weight basis.

Paints and inks form the largest market, accounting for 38 per cent of demand as shown in Figure 1.

In the paint and ink sector the market is split only between acrylics and vinyls, with acrylics being the dominant technology with 62 per cent of the market and vinyls the minor constituent at 38 per cent. Vinyls, however, predominate in the adhesives and sealants sector, where there is also limited use of styrene-butadiene emulsions, as shown in Figure 2.

The synthetic emulsion polymers market in Europe is a mature market, with growth dependent on water-based paints and adhesives, paper, textiles, nonwovens and carpet production. These sectors are all fairly mature markets where there has been a degree of consolidation, with only the nonwovens market consistently showing above-GDP growth. The Eastern European markets are still recovering from production declines in the 1990s and are less well developed.

Synthetic Emulsion Polymers in Europe is available in five volumes:

  • Volume 1: Emulsion polymers in paints and inks

  • Volume 2: Emulsion polymers in paper and packaging

  • Volume 3: Emulsion polymers in adhesives and sealants

  • Volume 4: Emulsion polymers in textiles, nonwovens and carpets

  • Volume 5: Executive summary (available only with the complete report)

Each volume costs 1,750 but Volumes 1-4 and the Executive Summary may be purchased for 5,000.
