Akzo Nobel to divest PUR adhesives business

Akzo Nobel to divest PUR adhesives business

Akzo Nobel announced plans to divest the company's industrial polyurethane (PUR) adhesives and systems business with a sale to the Sika Group, with completion of the sale expected by April 1. Terms were not disclosed. The business is part of Casco A/S, based in Fredensborg, Denmark, and is a major supplier of sandwich panel bonding systems for truck trailers and building-facade panels and bonding systems for wind-turbine blade production, Akzo Nobel said. The business had sales of 17 million euros in 2003.

Rudy van der Meer, the member of Akzo Nobel's Board of Management responsible for Coatings, said the PUR adhesives business has a “peripheral relationship” with the company's coatings businesses and no longer fits the coatings portfolio “from a strategic perspective”.

Sika is reported to be one of the world's largest producers of PUR adhesives used in load-bearing structures in the construction and industrial markets.
