Colour control breaks new ground

Colour management principles are well established in the formulation and application of paints, plastics and pigments. Specialist suppliers GretagMacbeth faced a new challenge to develop a system for asphalt producer Aggregate Industries to ensure conformity in a new coloured asphalt - Europave.

Aggregate Industries approached GretagMacbeth for suitable colour management systems and instrumentation to ensure perfect colour reproduction. GretagMacbeth recommended the hand held ColorEye XTH instruments for colour control throughout the plant and on site (Plate 2). This spectrophotometer is said to give an instantaneous colour reading and an unambiguous accept/reject result.

The new asphalt offers designers creative colours and textures. Black is no longer the only option. The breakthrough has been made possible by a clear binder that creates a whole spectrum of options. Europave can be produced in natural stone colours or by pigmentation in any colour required. The company can even match corporate colours to create giant logos in car parks for example.

GretagMacbeth offer a complete range of products for colour education, formulation and monitoring. These make it possible for colour designers to formulate precise colour finishes. Their systems are also used in the application of paints, plastics and pigments, to ensure that colour can be accurately communicated and reproduced throughout the supply chain. The company run an education programme that includes a national series of seminars.
