Range of PUDs

Range of PUDsKeywords: Baxenden Chemicals, Polyurethanes, Dispersions, Coatings

As part of the company's continuous development programme Baxenden Chemicals have recently introduced a new series of polyurethane dispersions (PUDs) for various coating industries.

The range consists of 40 per cent solids Witcobond 279-34 and 279-36, which are stated to be solvent-free. These Witcobond products were developed as very soft and soft coatings, respectively, for flexible substrates such as textiles and leather. Completing the series is the harder product Witcobond 279-38 (30 per cent solids) which can reportedly be used in topcoat formulations for similar applications. These three products are described as combining the non-yellowing properties of aliphatic diisocyanates with the inherent flexibility and hydrolysis-resistant- properties of their polyether components.

Baxenden Chemicals envisage that these water-based binders can also be formulated into diverse products such as foam coatings, e.g. for textiles, soft touch and dampening coatings for automotive components and other multi-purpose coatings for polymer and paper surfaces.

John Egan, general manager of Baxenden's Applied Chemicals Division, comments on the wider applications:

There is also the possibility of using the PUDs in coatings for harder substrates such as wood, metal and plastics. They can be cross-linked and formulated with a comprehensive series of additives to improve application proper and final performance.
