LabSystems informs us that its NautilusTM 2000, the new version of the laboratory centred LIMS, is now available (Plate 5). Nautilus LIMS (originally launched in 1998) was designed to deliver a major advance in laboratory productivity and reduce the LIMS cost of ownership. NautilusTM 2000 is believed by LabSystems to makes another significant step forward towards these goals, particularly in regulated laboratories, with the introduction of automated validation tests that radically reduce the validation effort.

Shipping as standard with Nautilus 2000 is an Automated Installation Qualification kit that validates the installation and runs automated tests against the software. Available as an additional option is the full Nautilus Validation kit. This includes – Automated tests, code for these tests, document of the extracted text and comments from the code, Y2K testing document, Traceability Matrix (links the tests to the functional descriptions), user Guide, all results from the last validation cycle executed at LabSystems before product release, run time libraries and files from the test automation tool.

These validation tools are said to drastically reduce the effort and cost required by the customer to validate the system. As well as a direct cost benefit, these tools also allow customers to upgrade to new versions more frequently than would otherwise be possible and hence gain access to new productivity enhancing features and technologies.

Also available as standard in Nautilus 2000 are the first results of a collaborative development effort to incorporate chemical structures and spectral data within Nautilus LIMS. LabSystems, Synopsys Scientific Systems (www.synopsys.co.uk) and Galactic Industries (www.galactic.com) are working with customers and other suppliers in a Joint Application Development program to develop solutions for integrating Spectral data and Chemical Structures to Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).

Nautilus 2000 has been made "Chemistry Aware" through the incorporation of the Accord ActiveX Chemistry control from Synopsys. For each chemical registered with Nautilus 2000, the system can display the Chemical Structure and perform various chemical calculations such as molecular weight, molecular formula and percentage composition.

AtlasTM 2000, the new version of the chromatography data system from Thermo LabSystems, has also recently been launched.

Atlas (Plate 6) is a chromatography data system designed for multiple users and multiple instruments, for use in fully networked, secure and regulated environments. Atlas has been developed and optimised for Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows NT and uses the Microsoft Office style guide for its user interface design.

The new version claims numerous new features including:

  • All new reporting package.

  • Automated validation kit and supporting documentation.

  • Start Run wizard for simplified operation.

  • Introduction of Capillary Electrophoresis (CE) correction.

  • A range of new calculations.

  • Enable calibration statistics for reporting.

The New Atlas Report Manager is described as having a host of reporting features including statistical and summary tools with a "point and click" functionality for report design.

Atlas 2000 is supplied as standard with an Automated Installation Qualification kit that validates the installation and runs automated tests against the software. Available as an additional option is the full Atlas Validation kit. This Validation kit includes Automated tests, Test documentation and descriptions, run time libraries and files from the test automation tool, and all the results from the fast validation cycle executed at LabSystems before product release.

These validation tools are reported to drastically reduce the effort and cost required by the customer to validate the system. As well as the direct cost benefit claimed, these tools also are said to allow customers to upgrade to new versions more frequently than would otherwise be possible and hence gain access to new productivity enhancing features and technologies.
