An automotive paintshop usually employs up to 300 people, outputs hundreds of cars a day and is a vital process in automotive production. It is essential that the whole process runs smoothly, and this quality process can benefit by all involved in the paintshop having an understanding of not only their own responsibilities, but also the total process.

Premier Manufacturing Support Services, a division of the Durr Group, has recently released a new Interactive Training CD-ROM for just this purpose. The easy-to-use CD offers a generic introduction and overview, and is applicable to all automotive paintshops. Intended for all paint shop employees, it can be used in preparing during new employee induction, or as a reference tool for those with years of experience.

Everything, from the incoming body-in-white through to wax and storage, is clearly explained. The emphasis is on equipment: how that equipment relates to other equipment and how it relates to the process as a whole, i.e. how the electrocoat relates to the colour spray, and how the colour spray relates to the sealer deck. A section on key performance indicators outlines what results should be expected, such as temperatures, output, etc. and ties the training to actual situations.

The CD offers information, easy-to-read diagrams, and operational techniques. Video footage of an entire paint shop is shown throughout, and a question and answer session is included at the end of each section.

"Anyone who knows how to point and click can use this CD", said Frank Clancy, managing director, Premier. "It is an indispensable tool that every paint shop employee should possess. A deeper understanding of the total process, rather than just one area, will improve both the quality and output of any facility. And having employees that are more informed and more involved in what they're doing improves morale as well, as they can view their role in the wider scheme of the shop."

The CD, which was the result of over a year's worth of planning and preparation, allows employees to return to it whenever necessary. It comes with a detailed manual that can be used on its own if required.

Premier Manufacturing Support Services, formerly Durr EcoService, was renamed due to the Durr Group's acquisition of the Ohio-based Premier, a company known world-wide for its technical and manufacturing support services.
