Malvern Instruments reports that it has launched a new "Quality Audit Standard" material to help users of its particle size analysers validate the performance of their sample dispersion units (Plate 2).

The standard material comprises polydisperse glass spheres in the size range 10 to 120 microns, packaged in precisely dispensed "one-shot" samples which have been accurately riffle-split from the bulk and have been thoroughly characterised to establish their reproducibility. A starting quantity of 250kg was riffle-split to ensure long term continuity of materials over several years with no batch-to-batch variation.

According to Malvern the "one-shot" concept is designed to eliminate errors associated with poor sampling of polydisperse glass beads from the bulk. This means that the user can be confident that any measurement showing departure from an expected value is due to the unit being tested rather than sampling techniques.
