Reflective topcoats for plastics

Keywords: Trimite, Plastics, Coatings

Trimite reports that it has launched a single-pack Plastilac® coating designed to create either a highly reflective metallic appearance or a chrome effect on plastics. According to Trimite these finishes have not hitherto been possible on plastics using conventional paints - the new coating, therefore, provides a highly convenient and cost-effective alternative to vacuum metallisation and chrome plating.

Designated "JI89", the new Trimite coating has been developed for finishing plastic moulded components used in automotive interiors and wheel trims, electrical, audio, photographic and lighting equipment and mobile phones (Plate 10), to name but a few.

The metallic finish is a two-coat system and the chrome finish is a three-coat system. Theoretical coverage of both is 10m2/litre at five microns.

J189 is said to be fast drying in air and can be overcoated with a high gloss clearcoat to further enhance the visual effect and provide additional surface protection.

An information sheet on Trimite's J189 reflective topcoat is contained in a new Plastilac® literature pack, which is available on request from the company.
