The recent launch of a new range of digital printing inks specifically designed for high quality silk marks the European market entry by DuPont Ink Jet Inks, a business unit of DuPont Performance Coatings.

DuPont Ink Jet Inks develops digital printing inks in co-operation with leading ink jet printer manufacturers. The technology is based on DuPont’s proprietary chemical process technology and high quality manufacturing. The inks are used in ink jet printers for homes, offices, and industrial applications, such as graphics and textile printing.

Digital textile printing has the potential for significant growth. This technology is believed to offer printers an attractive alternative to traditional design and production methods, including reduced waste and minimised environmental concerns.

“We will enter this segment of the market with a cost attractive ink jet system and will remain a major player through ongoing product innovation”, says John Kane, product marketing manager. These inks were specially formulated for silk printing. Other products for printing nylon and wool fabrics will soon follow. “We plan to support the textile industry’s needs for high-quality digital inks to advance the capabilities and functionality of ink jet printing.”

Developed in co-operation with several of the leading Italian silk printers, the new digital silk printing inks are formulated with the same colorants used for traditional screen printing of silk. They are available in two formulations for thermal and piezo printhead technologies.

Available in seven colours and a clear diluent, the new digital printing inks enable designers, textile printers, and apparel manufacturers to produce short-run, rapid-response, custom-designed fabrics. High quality and reliable printing are claimed. A very wide colour gamut is said to make them ideal for product samples, small to medium production lots with different designs or multiple colourways.

As traditional screen printed inks the DuPont inks require post processing, i.e. steaming of the printed silk, to ensure vibrant and colourfast results.
