Elementis Chromium reports that it is now delivering commercial quantities of its new CA 21 chromic acid to customers. CA 21 is produced in the company's recently commissioned, £11m plant at Eaglescliffe, Teesside, UK. The plant has a capacity of 25,000 metric tonnes p.a.

With main applications in metal finishing and the manufacture of wood preservatives, CA 21 claims to have set new standards in chromic acid quality. According to Elementis it has a uniform crystalline nature, giving superior flow, chemical purity and low dusting when compared to traditional flake material.

"CA 21 is already proving to be a technical success with key customers", noted Elementis Chromium managing director, Bruce Norman. "Customers will find CA 21 easier to use because of its novel form and will also find real benefit in the dust-free nature of the product", he added.

The new facility at Eaglescliffe, which combines "in-house" production technologies from both the UK and US operations, is the latest in a continuing series of investments by Elementis Chromium.

At its US plant in Corpus Christi, Texas, work is progressing well on a US$30 million kiln project. Scheduled for start-up in early 2000, the 350ft rotary kiln will be the world's largest. The new kiln replaces an existing rotary hearth, which has been in operation for over 25 years.

Also from Elementis are new ranges of high performance, red and yellow coatings grade pigments.

Designed to provide excellent colour properties in both solvent-based and water-based systems, Elementis have introduced several new products, sourced from their new coatings grade plant in Shenzhen, China. Key products in the easy dispersing yellows range are the lighter, greener shade YL01 988D and the darker, redder shade YL02 288D. New easy dispersing Kroma reds are R02097, R03097, R04097, R04597, R05097, R05597 and R06097.

These range in colour shade from the smaller particle size R02097 with its yellow shade, to the larger particle size R06097 which is a bluer shade red.

Other newcomers are the low viscosity Ultra Yellows YV1 988 and YV2 288, claiming the ability to achieve higher loading levels than standard grade yellow iron oxides in both waterborne and solvent based grinding systems.

A new addition to the Copperas red range is the light yellow shade Copperas red RI 099D extender for organic pigments - reportedly improving exterior durability and enabling reduction in pigment costs.

Elementis Pigments has a range of synthetic iron oxides and chromium oxides totalling well over 200 product lines, available in dry powder, liquid dispersion and granular formats.

Coatings applications include decorative paints and industrial coatings, tinting systems, automotive and refinish paints, wood stains, powder coatings, dispersions and inks.
