Corrosion test cabinet features salt fog remote fall-out facility

A new corrosion test cabinet has been launched by Ascott Analytical Equipment. Said to be the result of a new approach to the design and construction of this type of unit, the Ascott "S450t" is a 450 litre capacity cabinet suitable for salt spray, cyclic corrosion and saturation humidity testing (Plate 1).

The new cabinet has a clean-lined "high-tech" appearance, to fit in with the look of the modern laboratory, and incorporates a number of innovative features designed to streamline its operation. These include a top-mounted control module to facilitate initial setting and monitoring, and a salt fog remote fall-out system for the collection of samples, fitted as standard to all salt spray and cyclic corrosion versions.

The remote fall-out system comprises two 80cm2 collecting vessels, mounted on adjustable rails within the main chamber and linked to two externally located transparent measuring cylinders. This allows salt fog fall-out to be collected and measured continuously without the inconvenience of having to open the cabinet lid and interrupt testing.

An air purge facility is also standard, ensuring that salt fog can be quickly and safely exhausted from the interior of the cabinet before opening the lid.

The air saturator built into each cabinet can be topped-up either automatically or manually. If the cabinet is connected to a suitable pressurised water supply (deionised or distilled), the air saturator will top itself up automatically for continuous unattended testing. If a pressurised supply is not available, the air saturator can be easily topped-up by hand and will last for more than two days (i.e. over a weekend) between fills.

The cabinet is also supplied with a new type of salt solution reservoir which has an increased capacity of 120 litres. The reservoir features a transparent front with 20 litre graduations, enabling the quantity of salt solution to be easily checked visually. A hinged lid is fitted for convenience when filling the reservoir.

Ascott offers an extended warranty on the S450t cabinet and will be introducing two new models within the next few months - a 1,000 litre capacity unit and a bench-top version, based on the same design concept.
