Engineering company Syddal Engineering Ltd, of Denton, Manchester, has been highly commended in the NORWEB Business Energy Awards.

John Beckitt, chairman of NORWEB, presented Andrew Holmes, managing director, Syddal, with a plaque at a special ceremony at the Reebok Stadium, Bolton (Plate 16).

The Business Energy Awards were initiated by NORWEB 15 years ago and are operated through its Customer Technology Centre, EMTEC, in Chorley, Lancashire. The awards recognise companies and organisations which use electrical systems creatively for efficiency and productivity in industry and buildings.

Syddal, which manufactures gas and water pipeline repair equipment, was hampered by an inefficient solvent-based paint coating process which restricted manufacturing to just 100 finished products a day. The limitations also prevented the company from tendering for large-scale projects and stunted new product development.

After consulting industrial engineers at EMTEC, Syddal replaced its dip operation with an in-line powder coating operation, incorporating a powder spray booth, conveyor system and infrared curing oven. Production has increased by 60 per cent, sales increased four-fold and, with solvents now eliminated from the process, working conditions have improved for staff. The company is now in a position to compete for larger orders and has won substantial new business both in the UK and overseas.

Syddal was highly commended in the industrial category for companies with up to 100 employees.
