Sorvall Products, LP in Newtown, Connecticut, USA, and Heraeus Instruments GmbH in Hanau, Germany, two established laboratory equipment manufacturers, have carried out their merger into a major international firm. The new company is called Kendro Laboratory Products. They have combined annual sales of more than $170 million. The "Sorvall" and "Heraeus" brand names will continue to be used on the respective product ranges.

The merger brings together a US company, Sorvall, and a German company, Heraeus Instruments. Together, more than 1,000 employees will serve customers throughout the world.

Sorvall, originally founded in 1948, is located in Newtown, Connecticut. Acquired by Du Pont in 1973, Sorvall was part of their Medical Products Division for 23 years. Divested from Du Pont in 1996, the company once again operated independently, with more than 400 employees. Sorvall specializes in manufacturing centrifuges and cell-separation systems.

Heraeus Instruments, with headquarters in Hanau, Germany, has more than 600 employees. A subsidiary of Heraeus Holding, a diversified $5 billion German company, Heraeus Instruments specializes in the manufacture, sale and servicing of laboratory equipment such as incubators, centrifuges, clean air equipment, ovens and freezers. Heraeus Instruments reported 1997 sales of $95 million. The company has manufacturing sites in Hanau and Osterode, Germany.
