Elementis opens $15 million plant in China

Elementis plc announces the opening of a $15 million plant in China to expand its operations in the Asia Pacific Region.

The plant Elementis Shenzhen Ltd is a joint venture in which Elementis plc has a majority interest, and will operate within the Elementis Pigments business. The facility is believed to give Elementis Pigments the only Asian-based plant capable of manufacturing high-quality iron oxide pigments for the most demanding coatings and chemical applications.

The new plant was officially opened by Mr He Chu Ben, director of Nanshan District, and Mr Liang Dao Xing, secretary of the Chinese Communist Party Committee in Nanshan District.

Jerry Linnenbringer, president of Elementis Pigments Inc., said: "The Shenzhen plant is built to be a labour-efficient, cost-effective manufacturing facility utilizing locally-produced raw materials. This facility will give us a competitive advantage in the coatings and chemical sectors over European imports."

In addition to the manufacture and development of iron oxide pigments for the most demanding applications in the coatings and construction industries, the facility will be used for the future expansion of the Elementis range of formulated products to both Chinese and international markets.

Based in the Nanshan District of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone in Guangdong Province, the plant offers a number of benefits as a manufacturing base. These include available raw materials and ready access to China's transport infrastructure, including the ports of Shekou and Hong Kong.

The Shenzhen plant is a 12,000 square metre facility. Initial capacity is 20,000 mt of iron oxide pigments. This is scheduled to increase during the year. The plant will operate to the highest health, safety end environmental standards.
