A new in-line disintegrator, developed for delumping, size reduction and mixing slurries for the chemical industry is now available from Hosokawa Rietz Ltd.
The RI3(12) has been designed to complement the RI2(6) and RI2(8) models already in use and maintains many of that series' features (Plate 7). Designed to accommodate the ever increasing capacities seen in today's chemical industry the RI3(12) is believed to be capable of handling up to 150m3/hr or 500 gallons per minute (gpm) continuously at pressures up to 10 bar and temperatures up to 186°C.
Plate 7 The RI3(12) disintegrator
Fitted with standard pipe flanges, the RI3(12) is said to be easily and conveniently inserted into a pipeline and its stainless steel construction makes it suitable for even the most arduous process conditions. Product is delivered through the top of the machine and a hammer and screed design then subjects material to intense repetitive impact and attrition. Stainless steel hard-faced hammers run within the screen, which is perforated through 360°, the size of the perforation dictating the size of final product. Centrifugal force then carries the mixture through the screen and a basic mixing action is produced resulting from the severe turbulence and high shear rate created by the machine.
The intensity of the force applied inside the RI3(12) ensures faster throughput as particles are broken down. As a result, slurries with very high viscosity are easily handled. Maintenance is also very simple due to a quick opening design for fast, easy cleaning. Additionally, the lower section acts as a reservoir for the collection of any tramp material such as nuts and bolts etc., which may have entered the system in error.
Belt driven, the RI3(12)'s speed is adjustable and this in turn makes the machine highly flexible with regard to typical applications. These include dispersing colour pigments, delumping detergents and dyestuffs ahead of spraydrying, delumping PVC slurry, intimate mixing of materials and grinding in liquid suspension.
