Structural adhesive replaces mechanical fastening

Structural adhesive replaces mechanical fastening

We are informed that by switching to the latest Devcon structural adhesive technology from the use of traditional mechanical fastening has boosted productivity for Worcester Heat Systems by a staggering 150 per cent.

Formerly, Worcester Heat Systems, specialist manufacturers of domestic and industrial heat exchangers, had tapped and screwed stainless steel plates to the aluminium heating component of the heat exchanger.

Now, this time-consuming, labour-intensive operation, has been replaced by using Devweld 530, one of Devcon's new generation methacrylate adhesives.

The compound is applied via an automatic mixing and dispensing system to bond the parts. The result has been to improve productivity for this product dramatically by reducing unit times and consequently unit costs.

Devweld 530 is a high performance structural adhesive formulated to positively adhere many hard-to-bond substrates. It is just one in a wide family of methacrylates.

Devweld products claims a combination of convenience, ease-of-use and superior mechanical strength for bonding today's engineering metals, plastics and composites. Thereby solving a wide range of production problems and reducing process costs.

A non-sagging structural adhesive, Devweld 530 has been developed specifically for general purpose bonding of dissimilar substrates as well as bare metals, ceramics, wood and plastic. It claims excellent shear, peel and impact strength over a wide temperature range.

The compound is a gel-type two-part product mixed in a 1:1 ratio It is said to be ideal for filling gaps up to 4mm and has working time of three to five minutes and a fixture time of seven to ten minutes. Full cure is reached in 24 hours.
