New era begins for adhesives company

New era begins for adhesives company

A go-ahead company which converts and distributes adhesive products to the automotive, aeronautical, electronics, construction and many other industries worldwide, is taking the first step in a five-year expansion plan by moving to a new purpose-built factory. The relocation will give it nearly three times more space.

BDK Industrial Products Limited will be fully operational from its new headquarters at Levington Park, near Ipswich, Suffolk by the end of November. Established in 1959, BDK has been based at nearby Martlesham Heath for the last 27 years.

The move to Levington gives BDK 16,000 sq.ft of factory and office space compared with 6,000sq.ft at Martlesham.

BDK has grown steadily in recent years into a company whose annual turnover is now around £5 million. BDK currently employs 43 people and the relocation will create extra jobs.

BDK produces and distributes a vast selection of self-adhesive tape products, adhesives and sealants for a wide range of industries. Around 30 per cent of its products are exported worldwide.

Managing director, Graham Falconer said: "The move to Levington, which involves a £1/2 million investment, represents the first part of our five-year expansion plan. We had been looking for a new site for almost ten years which would allow us to run our expanding business under one roof rather than from five different buildings as we have at Martlesham".

BDK operates in a technology-led environment and is continually having to invest in new equipment not only to keep abreast of technological changes, but also simply to cope with growing demand. Only recently the company has spent well over £100,000 on three new state-of-the-art machines.

The company produces vast volumes of industrial products during the course of a year:

  • More than 50 million die cuts a year for automotive and other industries.

  • Millions of hang tabs for blister packs.

  • Around 50 million other customised self-adhesive products.

BDK solves a wide range of problems connected with sealing, joining, bonding, protecting, marking, identifying and packaging in a cost-effective manner.

The company also supplies products for respiratory protection, flooring and road traffic safety, electrical insulation, connection and static control, corrosion prevention and items for office work.

Quality control is a top priority for BDK. The company gained the ISO 9002 quality standard in 1991.

"Quality is a major issue in the company", says quality assurance manager, George Casarez. "Equipment is calibrated and tested regularly to ensure that it complies with standards set by the BSI and our staff have an ongoing programme of training and studying for new techniques."

As well as manufacturing and converting its own products for industrial use, BDK is also a distributor of adhesive products for major manufacturers such as 3M UK plc, BDF Tesa, Evode Ltd, Bostik Ltd and Sellotape Industrial Tapes. BDK's own technical sales staff advise customers on specialist uses for adhesive products.
