He is a native of the West Midlands, an old boy of the Wolverhampton Grammar School, and a graduate of Manchester University. He qualified as a solicitor in 1968 and has been in the coatings industry since 1976 when he joined Manders and became involved in their industrial finishes, decorative paints and printing inks businesses. Appointed to the main board in 1984, he was managing director of Manders' decorative paint businesses from 1985 to 1992 and is now corporate services director and company secretary.
