Voyager, ENCompass provides strategic growth for the Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC) initiative

Endeavor Information Systems has announced that Falmouth College of Arts (FCA) Libraries and the University of Exeter together selected the Voyager integrated library management system, ENCompass digital collection management system for managing, searching and linking digital information and the Media Scheduling media management system for what will become their combined library services in Cornwall at the new purpose-built £45m campus at Tremough, on the outskirts of Penryn, near Falmouth. The libraries will employ Endeavor's Media Scheduling system for media equipment booking. Voyager will be the first Web-enabled system for Falmouth College of Arts, replacing Telnet access through the Dynix system previously in place at the libraries.

The collaborative growth of many of the libraries made Voyager and ENCompass relatively easy selections for the CUC Hub. Anne George, Director of Academic Services, explained that, as the project's boundaries grew, the libraries needed to be forward-thinking in their investment. They looked for library systems that would last and be flexible to the addition of new systems and external software as the campuses grew.

"We asked 'How is this system going to take us forward? Is this an open system?"', George said: "Also, Endeavor did stand apart from other vendors – adding products like Blackboard or other systems would be possible."

Stephen Pellow, IT Librarian, explained: "Endeavor demonstrated a commitment to open systems and enabled us to provide a continuity between systems at the College. ENCompass was the most comprehensive product for digital library issues."

George seconded: "We looked in detail at the systems available, ENCompass was by far the system that most closely met all of our requirements."

Other Endeavor systems were also important. "Endeavor presented a strong Media Scheduling Module in production", said Pellow. He explained that the system was being purchased for managing the entire range of Academic Services, including the administration of technical studio spaces and equipment loan centres, such as the newly opened Media Centre, in addition to managing more traditional library services. "We needed a system that integrated the other Academic Service resource centres within the College. Endeavor has those solutions."

Jane Burke, Endeavor President and CEO, said: "Libraries face significant change as new capabilities offer great, new options for end users, yet traditional library practices remain essential. The Falmouth College of the Arts and University of Exeter Libraries have a clear vision of the need to deliver both. They are to be commended for thoroughly evaluating the vision of library system vendors and the dependability of their systems as they undertake their exciting new projects."

The Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC) is a unique partnership to expand higher education opportunities in Cornwall between the universities of Exeter and Plymouth, Falmouth College of Arts, the Open University, the College of St Mark and St John in Plymouth, and the further education providers in Cornwall, namely Cornwall College, Truro College and Penwith College.

The purchase of the new systems was made possible via the Tremough Development Vehicle, a joint venture company for FCA and the University of Exeter. In phase one, Voyager and ENCompass will serve the needs of Falmouth College of Arts. During the course of phase two in 2003/2004, the resources of the University of Exeter's existing educational provision in Cornwall will be prepared for the move into a purpose-built Learning Resource Centre in time for the start of the 2004/2005 academic year. These existing resources include the collections of Camborne School of Mines and the Institute of Cornish Studies, which are both moving to the new Tremough Campus along with the Cornwall-based Lifelong Learning provision. These established programmes will be joined from 2004 by new degrees in English, environmental and a range of applied sciences.

Falmouth College of the Arts is a specialist University Sector College which educates 1,700 undergraduate and postgraduate students. The only independent higher education in the County of Cornwall, Falmouth College of the Arts holds an international reputation for superior programmes in the arts, design, media and communication at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

The University of Exeter has some 12,000 students (of whom around 3,500 are postgraduates) and offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, professional training and short courses as well as research and consultancy services to the business community. The Peninsula Medical School, a partnership between the Universities of Exeter and Plymouth and the NHS Trusts in the South West, was established in 2001.

Canadian universities use Endeavor's solution

Endeavor Information Systems has announced that Version 5 of ScienceServer is now available for full use at the University of Toronto (UT) and will be operating on a new server funded by the OCUL/OII (Ontario Information Infrastructure) Scholarly Information Resources Project. With this release, articles are available not only in the existing PDF format but also in HTML/XML format. This format introduces a number of features that will enhance the use of journals, including the ability to link from citations to other articles.

The new Web address of http://scholarsportal.info is introduced with this upgrade to give the ScienceServer system a less "UT-centric" address and the new identity for the service. The following universities across Canada currently have access: University of British Columbia, Brock University, University of New Brunswick, Ryerson University, University Health Network, University of Toronto, Trent University, University of Waterloo, University of Windsor and York University. An additional 12 universities will soon join: Carleton University, University of Guelph, Lakehead University, Laurentian University, Nipissing University, Ontario College of Art and Design, University of Ottawa, Queen's University, Royal Military College of Canada, University of Western Ontario, Wilfred Laurier University, and McMaster University.

The new version of ScienceServer has over two million articles from the full-text journals published by Elsevier Science (including Academic Press), Kluwer (Kluwer Academic Publishers, Kluwer Law International and Kluwer/Plenum) and Springer-Verlag. The University of Toronto is a member of the Strategic Partnership Program (SPP). SPP is a collaborative effort between Elsevier Science and major innovators and thought leaders in the field of digital scientific information.

As a future development for 2003, Endeavor's ENCompass system will be introduced as a new front-end for ScienceServer. Access to citations, articles and footnotes will be through LinkFinderPlus in ENCompass. In the future all of the ScienceServer functionality will be incorporated into ENCompass.

Serving the largest university in Canada with seven major libraries, eight teaching hospital libraries and 40 college, faculty and department libraries, the University of Toronto Library ranks in the top three academic research libraries in North America. The Library's mission is to foster research and knowledge for the University's students, plus providing innovative services and comprehensive access to information founded upon developing resources as one of the leading research libraries in the world.

Endeavor Information Systems, based in Des Plaines, IL, was founded in September 1994. Over 1,000 academic and research libraries of every size have chosen Endeavor's Voyager integrated library system, 34 libraries have selected ENCompass and 44 have selected LinkFinderPlus. Endeavor offers a complete line of library solutions for traditional and digital collections.
