Panama migration damage will be difficult to address
Friday, November 1, 2024
Significance
More than 1 million people have migrated through the Darien since the beginning of 2021, driving deforestation and environmental degradation and polluting rivers and soil. This has affected biodiversity and increased cultural and health risks among local communities.
Impacts
- Improved connectivity as part of migration control efforts will open the Darien National Park to illicit logging and mining activities.
- Increasing human activity could disrupt animal behaviour and have harmful effects on food chains, affecting biodiversity.
- Migrant flights into countries north of the Darien, such as Nicaragua, are popular but will not replace the Darien route.
