Sri Lankan president will be confident about polls
Friday, November 1, 2024
Significance
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake announced them on September 24, a day after assuming office following his victory in the September 21 presidential election. Dissanayake leads the leftist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) party. The JVP-led National People’s Power (NPP) alliance, which comprises 21 parties and organisations altogether, had just three out of 225 seats in the dissolved legislature.
Impacts
- The government will provoke disgruntlement among higher earners as it tries to shift the tax burden towards them.
- Intensifying efforts to tackle corruption will help sustain the NPP’s popularity and weaken certain opposition parties.
- Despite the JVP’s historical anti-India, pro-China stance, Colombo will keep trying to maintain strong ties with both Delhi and Beijing.
