Centrists are taking control of Germany’s Greens

Tuesday, October 29, 2024

Significance

Unlike other party leaders, Green leaders cannot hold public office, so they tend to have lower profiles compared with the party’s public representatives. Nonetheless, their backgrounds and statuses have an important bearing on the party’s stability and policy direction.

Impacts

  • The Greens’ rightward shift could see the party take votes from the CDU but also lose votes to left-wing Die Linke.
  • The CDU appears more open to the idea of forming a government with the Greens.
  • The economic downturn makes it unlikely that the three ruling parties’ polling prospects will improve much before the next election.
  • The prospect of an early federal election is growing as the governing parties become increasingly detached from each other.
