Wagner loses control of CAR-South Sudan militia

Friday, October 4, 2024

Significance

The militia has been militarily active in the South Sudan-CAR border area and could yet become involved in conflicts in both South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

Impacts

  • Wagner’s exit from Obo is another embarrassment that could weaken its position at a time when CAR is exploring other security options.
  • AKG activity in South Sudan could create risk for Azande politicians in Juba, which may be disquieted by pan-national Azande nationalism.
  • Azande enmity towards Western Equatoria State Governor Alfred Futuyo could fuel Azande confrontations with state authorities.
