Ugandan incursions pose risks for South Sudan
Monday, September 30, 2024
Significance
In September, Ugandan soldiers also moved into Raja County, Western Bahr el Ghazal State, in order to mine lucrative gold deposits. All three incursions have caused unrest among local South Sudanese groups.
Impacts
- Discontent over Kiir’s recent announcement of a further two-year delay to elections will be inflamed by anger over the incursions.
- Ugandan control of South Sudanese gold mines will further reduce government revenues already crippled by an oil pipeline rupture.
- Any clashes between the RSF and the Ugandan military would imperil South Sudanese efforts to remain neutral in Sudan’s civil war.
