Hungary wants to make its mark in Chad
Monday, September 30, 2024
Significance
The two leaders signed a declaration on establishing a comprehensive strategic partnership, likely to precede the deployment of up to 200 Hungarian troops to Chad. Budapest will also seek to allocate EUR14mn (USD16mn) from the European Peace Facility to establish an educational centre for Chad's military.
Impacts
- Hungary’s military deployment may help Chad’s forces supress insurgents and keep Deby in power.
- Hungary joins the likes of Turkey and the Gulf States among countries looking to expand their presence in Africa.
- Budapest’s decision is generally aligned with the EU’s emphasis in Africa on counterterrorism and managing migration flows.
