Peru's Boluarte will stay in office at least for now

Tuesday, April 11, 2023

Significance

There appears to be a political understanding between parties on the centre and far right that reduces pressure for calling early elections. President Dina Boluarte now appears keen to serve out her constitutional term ending in 2026. The power of street protests to push for speedy elections has diminished significantly.

Impacts

  • The lack of a vice-president may strengthen Boluarte’s negotiating position.
  • The right in Congress will seek to increase its control over key institutions, such as the Ombudsman’s office and the electoral authorities.
  • Boluarte is exposed to charges that she received illegal campaign contributions in 2021.
