Significance
The leaders held talks on a range of issues, including economic cooperation. Kishida afterwards described India as an “indispensable partner” in Japan’s attempts to realise its vision of a “free and open” Indo-Pacific region.
Impacts
- Japanese investment in India will increase in the medium-to-long term and diversify into new sectors such as clean energy.
- Shared wariness of Chinese assertiveness will remain a major factor in bringing the countries closer together.
- Delhi and Tokyo will continue to engage not only bilaterally but also through the Quad, a group which also includes Canberra and Washington.
