Fallout from Sierra Leone protests may deepen tensions

Significance
The government described this as a “bloody and violent insurrection”. The state has subsequently clamped down on opposition activists but has done little to address underlying economic conditions. Parliament also passed significant legislation relating to dispute arbitration, land rights and mining in July and August.
Impacts
- The hardline Paopa faction of the ruling Sierra Leone Peoples Party is likely to clamp down harshly on any internal party dissent.
- Government relations with the EU will worsen over perceived EU support for the opposition.
- Both leading political parties will employ dedicated social media teams to fight an online propaganda war.
