Significance
Surveys suggest that young people's motives for demonstrating were not so much support for Navalny as a general statement of dissatisfaction with a state out of touch with their lives and concerns -- a rejection of the status quo.
Impacts
- Putin's approval rates will remain low among the young, but he does not currently enjoy majority approval in any age group.
- The desire to emigrate has increased in the last seven years: 50% of 18-24-year-olds are considering leaving.
- The paramilitary Youth Army will be complemented by the expanding programme of 'patriotic education' designed to instill obedience.
