Significance

As in other regions, politics in Central America remains dominated by efforts to bring the COVID-19 pandemic under control, and looks likely to remain so for the rest of the year. Vaccine programmes are making some progress, but economic hardship has worsened for many, aggravating longstanding problems of poverty and insecurity. Recent and upcoming elections may bring new dynamics to regional politics, but will not be transformative.
