Significance

President Nicolas Maduro remains in office despite three opposition efforts to displace him since January. There have been no high-level defections, but Maduro is significantly weakened and his six-year term is untenable. International support for opposition ‘interim president’ Juan Guaido will not redress the domestic political weaknesses of Guaido and the broader opposition movement.
