Brazilian democracy is at risk of eroding

Monday, June 10, 2019

Subject

Concerns over democratic stability.

Significance

The executive’s continuing conflicts with the legislative and judicial branches, President Jair Bolsonaro’s insinuations that Brazil is “ungovernable” through its current democratic system, his defence of the 1964-85 military dictatorship and a widespread perception that he and his team are unable to run effectively a profoundly divided country with deep economic problems have all contributed to raise doubts about the stability of Brazilian democracy.

Impacts

  • Bolsonaro’s focus on ‘social wars’ will alienate many economically liberal supporters.
  • A narrowing of his support base could lead the president further to radicalise his stance on social issues.
  • A cycle of ever-increasing radicalisation would damage an already fractured society.
