Conference recognises progressive dairy sector

Article Type: Food facts From: Nutrition & Food Science, Volume 41, Issue 5

The dairy industry is the most attentive to the issues of sustainability of all agricultural sectors. The rate of progress of the industry in addressing environmental concerns was discussed at an international conference of nutritionists, environmentalists, NGOs and dairy sector representatives organised by Dairy UK in London yesterday.

Conference chairman Richard Laxton w\elcomed recognition of the significant progress being made by the industry, adding that that there was agreement between the stakeholders on a number of themes. At the same time, he emphasised the need for everyone in the supply chain, NGOs and government, to work together. He said: “It is clear that the door is open for such dialogue”.

Judith Bryans, Director of The Dairy Council, said “Dairy foods are nutrient rich and have a lower environmental cost than people think. Policies aimed at reducing Green House Gas emissions from food consumption must take their nutritional value into consideration”.

Presentations from all the experts can be found on the Dairy UK web site at: www.dairyUK.org
