The Mealwheel

Article Type: Food Facts From: Nutrition & Food Science, Volume 38, Issue 3.

Can a simple plastic plate help in the fight against obesity? The Mealwheel is the first adjustable, pocket size, plate in the UK that enables dietitians and nutrition experts to provide a tailored approach to dietary management. With its unique design it is possible to adjust the proportions of the three major food categories of protein, carbohydrate and vegetables to aid discussion around changes to diet.

Developed with a dietitian and supported by the National Obesity Forum, the Mealwheel is designed to simplify the diet message. With the aid of the website, www.mealwheel.co.uk, the Mealwheel can be used to demonstrate how the proportions of carbohydrate, protein and vegetables should be adjusted in accordance with physical activity to help with weight management. The plate also has simple illustrations to give examples of foods that contain carbohydrates and proteins, along with images of vegetables.
