Thursday, 12 July included:

  • Introduction to LACA 2007 Conference – Michael Rodd, Conference Chairman

  • The School Food Trust – One year on and looking ahead – Prue Leith, Chairman, School Food Trust

  • Food service and the whole school day – School Food TrustThe School Food Trust explained the new government regulations which included the new food-based standards for all school food other than lunches, the plans for the introduction of the nutrient-based standards and how the final food-based standards will work alongside these.

  • Healthy Schools Programme – self-validation and assessment of the new requirements – Michelle Smith, National Co-ordinator, Healthy Schools Delivery Unit, Department of HealthTo gain accreditation, schools must now prove they have sound food policies. Self-validation is the new direction – are your schools ready and what role will or should caterers play?

  • Building schools for the future – Dr Kate Reynolds, Director, capital strategy and Programmes, Mouchel ParkmanAs new guidance for local authorities is about to be published, what is the latest direction from Government and how will it affect local authority catering services in the future?

  • Food labelling – the good, the bad and the ugly! – Les Bailey, Local Authorities Co-ordinators of Regulatory ServicesAs the big supermarkets slug it out with differing schemes in the food labelling wars, how are consumers coping? Confusion, crisis or common sense? What is the knock on effect for the public sector caterer in terms of procurement and customer expectation?

  • Food, farming and school meals – Sir Don Curry KB CBE, Chair of the Sustainable Food Farming and Food Strategy Delivery Group2007-2008 is the year of food and farming. In 2006 Defra announced a further £1/4 million to boost local produce procurement for school food.

Friday, 13 July included:

  • Free healthy school meals – Learning from the Hull experienceProfessor Colquhoun outlined the experience of Hull City Council's attempt to provide free healthy school meals to all primary age children in the city. He included education, health, community and partnership experiences as well as other pertinent issues of relevance to school caterers nationwide.

  • The students are revolting – dealing with customers resistanceWhere will the schools meals service of 2012 and beyond be?

Throughout there was a large exhibition of organisations providing foods, services and equipment to schools.
