International Egg Forum

International Egg Forum

Agra Europe's International Egg Forum in Brussels was held on 19th-20th June 2007. Trends in the egg shell and egg products industry and the potential effects that implementation of the directive will have on the European industry were covered. It was also a great opportunity to make new business contacts.

The Forum gave the chance to hear first hand information from key European Commission officials and other senior executives on the consequences of the egg reforms, enabling you to ensure that your company complies with the regulatory framework which will outlaw conventional battery cages in 2012. Analysis of the socio-economic impacts of the different systems of keeping laying hens was given from the expert speakers.

With animal welfare pressures mounting and demand for non-cage eggs on the increase, supermarkets and the food processing sector are turning away from battery eggs and replacing them with barn, free range and organic eggs. This is reshaping the industry and there are doubts whether the so called "enriched cages" have a future – a topic which was discussed by Andrew Joret, Deputy Chairman of the British Egg Industry Council and Director of Deans Foods Limited.
