Heat wave

Heat wave

There is a heat wave all over the UK, and for many of us, it means some discomfort as we head to work, run errands or sit in the car. But for the older people we serve, it can be a life-threatening situation. During periods of extreme heat, older people are among the few groups that are the most susceptible to harm from dehydration or other heat-related problems.

This is an opportunity to spread awareness in your community and residential care facilities on how to keep safe and how life-sustaining your services are. Advice on wearing cooler lighter clothes during this period, keeping away from too much sun and if there is a need to go out to apply sun screen, is helpful. Important reminders to drink water at frequent intervals, is essential at this time, so spread the word, either during meals on wheels deliveries, home care visits, in your day centres, luncheon clubs or care homes.

For help on implementing a good hydration policy, go to the NACC web site at: www.thenacc.co.uk, go into the members area, scroll down to the Library and you can link to the Water for Health Toolkit.

While for help on Heatwave Plans, the Department of Health web site www.dh.gov.uk has information on looking after yourself and others, advice for residential and nursing home managers and for health and social care professionals.
